Financial Aid and Federal Student Loans Update for MSW Students

Changes to federal student loan programs can be confusing and we want to assure students that the structure and tuition of UConn’s Online MSW program are designed to remain accessible under federal guidelines.

  • *Federal Loan Limit: Effective July 1st, 2026, federal support for most graduate students will be capped at $20,500 annually (with a $100,000 lifetime limit, excluding undergraduate loans). The Grad PLUS loan option, which previously funded amounts exceeding this limit, is being phased out.
  • The UConn Advantage: Fortunately, UConn’s Online MSW program's structure offers a significant benefit to our students. The annual tuition for the UConn Online MSW program falls within the $20,500 annual federal loan limit. This means that, based on current program costs, most of our students will be able to cover their annual tuition costs using the federal loan program alone, without needing the phased-out Grad PLUS option.
  • Typical tuition by year is as follows:
    • Year 1 – 18 Credits = $15,840
    • Year 2 – 24 Credits = $21,120
    • Year 3 – 18 Credits = $15,840

We encourage all students to review the latest information on federal financial aid and contact the UConn Office of Student Financial Aid Services for personalized guidance at 860-486-2819.

* Please note that federal student loan programs are subject to ongoing legislative changes - we encourage all applicants to monitor official federal student aid websites for the latest updates.
